We’ve had a mixed bag of weather this week. Temperatures have been really up and down again, snow, rain and sunshine. The pistes have been icy in the early mornings and softening up and a bit slushy from around 2pm to the last lifts. The connecting and lower routes have been suffering with brown patches and the unwanted rain that we had last week below around 1500 metres. Winter returned briefly on Tuesday, bringing with it good amounts of fabulous fresh new snow and temperatures down to freezing below 1000 metres. Wednesday we were rewarded with a bluebird day all over the Alps. Incredibly the lower pistes have been skiing really well and the pisteurs have been more like magicians keeping the snow well-packed. Hopefully this latest snowfall will help with the thin cover in places and to prolong good ski conditions. Higher up this new snowfall means an increased risk of avalanche, so take care out there.
In Les 2 Alpes after a mixture of snow, wind, rain and even a little sun in the last week, we have more settled weather conditions with sunshine for the next few days. Last week's snow really has improved conditions up on the higher slopes. On Sunday there is a small chance of a little more snow but the temperatures are mild for March and the freezing level is rising and will consistently be above 2000 metres. This is due to a moderate Fohn (Foehn) developing which is a downward warm and dry wind that occurs on the leeside of the mountains causing temperatures to rise.
Be aware that in the off-piste areas the new snow in some places will provide only thin cover and could be hiding rocks, especially at lower altitudes. Tentatively looking ahead, there may be light snow in the forecast at high altitude next Tuesday and Wednesday and more snow, moderate winds and lower temperatures again by next weekend but that’s 9 days away so very unpredictable at the moment.
