1. Funicular visit

Location
Les Deux Alpes

The Dôme Express funicular offers a unique way to reach 3,400 m, taking both skiers and pedestrians safely beneath the glacier. Starting from 3,100 m, this remarkable transport allows visitors to access the high-altitude environment of Les 2 Alpes with ease, making the glacier more accessible to everyone.

Once at the summit, the Destination 3400 tour begins, offering a range of unforgettable experiences. Explore the Grotte de Glace, an ice cave sculpted into the glacier itself, and enjoy the panoramic views from the Belvédère des Écrins. Visitors can also make use of the orientation table to learn about the surrounding peaks and the incredible alpine landscape.

The Dôme Express is truly unique in France, as 100 % of its route passes beneath the glacier. The vault has been excavated up to 40 m underground, ensuring the funicular avoids direct contact with the ice while providing a safe and comfortable journey. Accessible via an inclined elevator, the funicular is suitable for all visitors keen to experience the glacier and the high-mountain environment in a convenient and extraordinary way.

Whether you’re a skier wanting to explore the slopes or a visitor eager to discover the glacier, the Dôme Express funicular offers an exceptional alpine adventure and breathtaking views.

2. Ice cave

Location
Les Deux Alpes

Walk through a two-hundred-metre gallery to reach a magical network of rooms carved twenty metres below the surface of the snow, deep inside the glacier.

The ice caves in Les Deux Alpes offer a true journey back to the ice age, with ethereal sculptures of dinosaurs and an impressive mammoth measuring six metres long and ten metres wide, all hewn directly from the Roche-Mantel glacier. Clever lighting adds to the atmosphere, creating a strange and captivating experience as you wander through the frozen world. Dug entirely by hand with nothing more than ice picks, the cave network consists of eight grottos, three rooms and the long entrance gallery, and takes around five months to complete each year.

Visit the website or ask at the tourist office for this season’s prices and opening times. The caves generally open in line with the lift schedule. Tickets are available at the ski pass offices, online, and at the tourist office.
