Les Deux Alpes has that properly wintery look this week, with the glacier sitting bright and white above town and fresh snow draped right down into the lower slopes. After the recent snowfall, the resort feels like it has clicked into a more settled mid winter pattern, with fuller cover across the mountain and a quieter, softer feel underfoot. It is a magical time to be here, especially when the light hits the high terrain early in the day.
Snow depths are currently around 200cm on the upper mountain and glacier, with about 50cm down at resort level. The last snowfall was reported over the weekend, and upper slope depths have risen by roughly 30cm over the past week, which has made a real difference to cover on pistes and on the margins of runs. Conditions are skiing very well across most of the area, with soft, supportive snow on groomed runs and noticeably improved coverage on the main links. Temperatures are staying below freezing up high, while the village is seeing a clear freeze thaw pattern, with colder mornings and milder afternoons. The freezing level has been sitting close to the 1300m mark, rising a little in the afternoons, and winds have generally been light. Despite the excellent snow quality, the recent heavy snowfall has left the snowpack sensitive in places and avalanche risk remains elevated, particularly in off piste and uncontrolled terrain, and in steep or wind loaded areas.
The next few days look mostly dry with a mix of cloud and brighter spells, which should help keep the current snow in good shape, particularly on shaded terrain and higher pistes. With temperatures staying seasonably cold up the mountain, conditions should remain stable on piste, while lower runs may soften a little in the afternoons if the sun breaks through. For events, there is night skiing scheduled in Les Deux Alpes on 14 January, and the First Tracks experience runs on 13 January if you fancy being up early with the piste team. Looking ahead, Les Lumières de la Muzelle takes place on 17 January, and Snowattack runs from 17 to 24 January.
Skiing in Les Deux Alpes is currently excellent across the mountain, with strong coverage and high quality snow on the pistes from top to bottom. Stick to marked and controlled areas, follow local safety guidance closely, and do not consider off piste skiing without a fully qualified local guide while avalanche risk remains elevated.
