Ski Tour of the Vallee Blanche sector

A quiet alternative for a ski day

Imprint
By Rod Frazer - BASS 2 Alpes, Updated

Do something a little different and ride the Vallée Blanche sector on the other side of Les 2 Alpes. Lot’s of people never ski this area which usually means it’s nice and quiet over there.

One way to get there is from the centre of the resort by the White Eggs take the Lutins Tow and turn left at the top. A narrow track traverses the resort past the nursery slopes under the Champamé Tow and over a small bridge onto a pleasant little green run which is marked Access Vallée Blanche. This gentle piste runs by some chalets and meanders under a couple of bridges and past the stables to the Cote Chairlift.

Jump on this chair to get up onto the other side of the resort. At the top ski back under the chair and past the restaurant to join the Vallée Blanche piste down to the bottom of the VB chair. At the top of the long four-man VB chair you can enjoy some really great views back over the valley up onto the rest of the ski area as well as onto the stunning Ecrin National Parc to the south.

From here you can ski down and right or simply keep to the right on the Super Venosc 1 or 2 pistes. Ultimately you will reach the Super Venosc chair back down at resort level. Take this chair to get you back up to 2100m. From here let the skis run over some big rollers to head left back towards the top of the VB chair. From here you can follow the main VB 1 piste back down to the Kanata restaurant. It’s a converted barn which offers the best rustic atmosphere of any of the L2A hill restaurants, with a central fireplace and an authentic smoky atmosphere! The food’s good too, unusually for a mountain restaurant they do excellent Mussels and Chips (Moules Frites). Deckchairs outside face the pyramid shaped Muzelle peak; a great spot to just sit in the sun with a mug of their homemade mulled wine.

Refuelled you can head left of the restaurant, ski down the Cote piste back to get to the Petite Aiguille chair to get back over to the other side. Turn right at the top and take the Demoiselles piste back into the resort, you can jump on the Village chair to get back up into the main ski area, or just keep traversing all of the way into the centre of town.

On a powder day the VB sector is fantastic as you can get fresh tracks in between the main pistes quite easily without having to know the area well. The colour coding of the pistes is not flattering over here so be aware the blues are more like reds in this sector! The area gets plenty of sun and has a lot of cannons so the best times to ski here is after fresh snow when the pistes are grippy or also when it’s very warm; everyone will be way up on the glacier and you can enjoy great spring snow and have the place to yourselves :)
