Cooling down in 2 Alpes summer 2019

The top places to keep fresh when the heat is too much

By Brian Kieran, Updated

As things heat up in Les Deux Alpes, you may find yourself looking for ways to cool off. At an altitude of 1650m, the resort is relatively high up compared to many other Alpine towns, so temperatures tend to be a little cooler than in the lower altitude resorts. Even so, the sun can be brutal in summer, especially during heat waves.

With that in mind, here's a quick rundown of some of the more refreshing activities you can partake in on those stiflingly hot days.

Lac de la Buissonnière

Near the entrance to the resort lies the water leisure park of the Lac de la Buissonnière, with kids playground and loads of space to picnic or lie around in the sun. The lake is open to the public from June 1st to September 30th and is monitored by a lifeguard for much of the summer season.

Outdoor public pool

If you're looking for a quick dip to cool off, Piscine la Croisette has two 25m outdoor swimming pools and plenty of space to lie around and sunbathe. Swimming lessons and aquagym are available and entry is free for holders of two-day lift passes or more. Normal entry is €5.50 for adults (13 years and over) and €4.40 for kids while those under five and over 72 go free. There is also a Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. The pool is open from June 22nd to August 31st from 10:30 to 19:00.

Watersports

If you're struggling to cool down, you could do worse than a dip in the icy glacial meltwaters of the local rivers flowing through the resort. There is a number of white water rafting and hydrospeed options in Les 2 Alpes but these mountain rivers are not to be messed with. All but the most experienced rafters must use one of the professional river guiding companies if they want to take to the white waters. You can also experience canyoning, with waterfall abseiling and water jumps. Certain to keep you cool on hot summer days!

Summer skiing

Of course, skiing and snowboarding can be a sure-fire way to work up a sweat but that just makes chilling out afterwards by one of the mountain restaurants or 'buvettes' with a refreshing beer all the more rewarding. Les 2 Alpes is one of the few places to offer summer skiing in the Alps and is generally under warm sunny conditions, with cheaper ski passes and an uncrowded resort.
