Moonlight Rescue for Trapped Mountaineers in La Meije
Helicopter rescues climbers from Trabuchet Glacier at night
Two climbers had to be rescued from the Glacier Tabuchet on Monday night, trapped in the mountains by bad weather.
The weather closed in on the two unfortunate alpinists on Sunday 27th September but the extent of the bad weather meant that helicopters could not be scrambled for another 22 hours. They made their rescue call at 7:45pm and patiently waited for a break in the cloud layer so that rescuers from Briancon PGHM could locate them. Once the gendarmerie helicopter arrived, a delicate winching operation at 3600m altitude lifted the two climbers to safety and they were deposited back on terra firma during Monday night.
The rescued climbers were apparently students from the French town of Gap.
