Boy skier falls 30m in crevasse, La Grave
Lucky escape for 17 year old off-piste skier
Skiing on the glacier de la Girose (3500 m) on the La Grave ski area, a young skier broke through a snow-bridge and fell some 30 metres into a crevasse.
Crevasse was hidden with fresh snow
Fortunately the skier was out skiing with his cousin who, not having the capacity to perform a crevasse rescue himself, skied down to the mid-station to raise the alert with the mountain rescue services.
The PGHM rescue issued four men to the area where the boy had fallen and successfully pulled the boy out of the 30 metre hole in the glacier.
Luckily the boy escaped with a few grazes, a broken nose and a bit of shock - nevertheless he was taken to hospital for surveillance.
Glacier skiing can be very dangerous and it is always advised to hire a ski guide when unsure of you ability.
