1. Mountain biking in Deux Alpes

Location
Les Deux Alpes

Les Deux Alpes has fast become a popular place for mountain biking, with a huge mix of different graded trails giving opportunities for novices and pros to test their skills.

There are trails with a descent of 2,500m, and the resort hosts some big competitions such as the Mountain of Hell, The Free Raid and the Downhill French Cup.

Downhill mountain biking

  • 91km of slopes between 3,200m and 700m of altitude
  • 2,480m vertical to play with
  • 18 all levels downhill trails
  • cross-country routes
  • skill centres at the top of Vallée Blanche and Crêtes areas
  • pumptrack at the foot of the slopes
  • lifts adapted to MTB
  • bike wash stations : Vallée Blanche, Diable, Venosc and at the foot of Jandri Express

Green trails

There are green graded DH trails with the shortest at 1.2km and with only -120m descent, so perfect for those new to mountain biking who want to give it a try.

Blue trails

The longest covers 6km and -630 of descent, which are also pretty mild tracks with a few soft berms and small jumps to practise on (obviously the faster you ride these the harder and some might say more fun they become).

Jandri

Starts from the top of the Jandri Express and is a little more technical than you might appreciate. Loose rocks abound, so only tackle this once you're really comfortable, and bear in mind that there's a lot of descent to cover before you're back in resort. This trail is covers -600m descent before you join another blue or red trails to get back down to the valley floor.

Red, black anbd elite trails

For the more experienced riders, there are red graded trails and black trails, plus an elite track built for riders at the very top of their game. These harder trails often have large jumps, high north shore sections and steep, tricky switch backs. The black track Satan lives up to its name…full body armour and solid nerves at the ready!

Check out the map of trails on the glacier side of the valley, accessed by the Jandri Express gondolas and on the Vallée Blanche side (which is more suited to beginner downhillers and cross country riding).

Bike Park

Les Deux Alpes Bike Park has a four-cross track, slopestyle, northshore, walls, tables and dirt lines.

Check out the Crêtes skills centre, which is a good practise area for beginners to get to grips with tabletops, berms and riding skinnies. In summer the bike area opens in late June and runs through to the beginning of September.

2. Green MTB trails

Location
Les Deux Alpes

The Deux Alpes Bike Park has green downhill trails for those of you looking to practise your skills and get more comfortable, or those of you who just want a bit of fun on a nice, easy track.

On the Vallée Blanche side of the valley, and starting from the top of the VB lift, is a 5km trail with descends -440m back to the bottom of the lift from where you can start over.

Or head over to the other green trail on the other side of the valley. It's quite a wide, gravelly track or fire road at the top and the corners are also wide and flowy so you can practise with confidence and get better at handling your bike.

L'Ange trail

Accessed from the top of the Diable high speed chairlift. Take a left from the top of the lift and head over towards the Jandri lift, which you'll pass underneath. This trail is longer at 7km and descends for -730m, so a good one to test your stamina and braking. There are some great views from not only the top of the Diable lift, but around half way down and also 2/3 of the way down where you can stop and admire the Veneon valley below.

See the trail on the maps here.

3. Red MTB trails

Location
Les Deux Alpes

Les 2 Alpes has a number of red downhill trails.

Belle Etoile

The highest trail starts from almost half way down the top of the Jandri gondola. You'll actually start on an enduro trail that follows the route of the Mountain of Hell event, and then you'll see the red signs for Belle Etoile just past the lake. This trail is only 1.5km long descending -200m and is a little bit of a moon scape with loose rock and shale like stones.

Rocky Line

From the bottom of this trail you can connect to this red, which is 2km long and -360m. The trail turns into a liaison route under the gondola, where you'll pop out onto a green trail and then you've got a few options to get back to resort - either the blue back to the bottom of the Village 1800 chair or another red Sapins.

Sapins

Takes you slap bang towards the Crankworx area, it's 2.5km long and -500m down to the bottom of the Jandri gondola. There are so many corners and berms in this trail, you'll love it.

666

Further over from the Diable chair lift is 666. Take a right from the top of the lift and onto the first part of the blue Diable trail where you'll soon see the signs for the red track. You're at around 2,400m here and the views across the Veneon valley are pretty special, that's if you give yourself time to stop and admire them on the way down! The trail is 5km long and descends -830m.

At the bottom of this trail you pick up the top of the red trail down into Venosc, or you can head back up the Diable and do 666 all over again.

Find the trails on the maps here. Look for the unbroken red lines.

4. Enduro and XC MTB trails

Location
Les Deux Alpes

There are both enduro trails and cross-country (XC) routes within the park.

The enduro trails are marked on the maps with broken coloured lines signifying their difficulty in either blue, red or black.

The cross country trails have a small arrow showing the direction of travel next to an unbroken line in either blue or red.

XC Veneon

The longest of these trails is this blue trail, which covers 22km, +115m, and -340m. As the name suggests it's down in the Veneon valley and starts at the bottom of the Venosc gondola.

Back up in the main resort of 2 Alpes, you'll find two easy blue enduro trails.

Super Venosc

Starts from part way down the Pied Moutet blue DH track at the top of the Vallée Blanche lift. Take a left at the top of the lift and descend 2.5km, -440m, through the trees and back into resort. You'll end up away from the lifts, but it's only a short pedal back to any of them you fancy.

Jandri enduro trail

On the other side of the valley is the highest starting point of any of the mountain bike trails in the valley, at the foot of the glacier. This trail snacks down over the rock moonscape from the top of the gondola back down -600m and 4.5km to the mid station of the Jandri gondola, where you can either pick up the lift and do it again, or transition onto a red or blue downhill trail.

Tallias

Heading down into Mont de Lans Village (at the opposite end of resort to the Venosc gondola) is this red enduro trail. This one follows the route of the chair lift down to Mont de Lans and snakes over some north shore sections and through the trees. It's 2km long and -320m of descent. You can lap it from the chairlift.

Vallons de Bons

The other XC trail in the bike park is this red, which is a nice, long 7km route, starting from the top of the Vallée Blanche lift. This one takes you the long way back round to the bottom of the lift, down over the ridge line towards Mont de Lans, back through the trees and traverses back across to rejoin the VB lift.

Getting a little more technical there are two black graded enduro trails.

Mountain of Hell

On the glacier side of the valley and starting not far from the top of the Jandri Express. Join the Jandri blue trail before taking a right onto the black trail. It's short, only 2km and only descends -300m. From here there's a liaison to the next black trail.

Choucas Bikers

The second black trail starts from just below the lake around two-thirds of the way down from the top of the Jandri gondola. It's only 1.5km long but quite loose under your tyres and descends -210m back close to the mid-station.

5. Elite MTB trails

Location
Les Deux Alpes

We skip straight from red to elite trails in the 2 Alpes bike park, and this one will put the fear of God into you if you're not an accomplished rider.

Fury

As the name suggests is a bit of an intimidating trail. There are some large features to navigate along the route, big drops into tight and technical corners, which should only be ridden by the best riders.

The trail starts from the top of the high speed Diable lift and covers 2.5km and -700m of descent.

The cross over point is where the north shore comes over the green l'Ange trail, so if you prefer to watch other people riding trails like this, this is a good place to stop.

Look for a cross-hatched black and white line.

6. Blue MTB trails

Location
Les Deux Alpes

There are blue downhill trails to choose from in 2 Alpes, on both sides of the valley.

Vallée Blanche side

Pied Moutet

Take a left from the top of the lift and descend on the trail that is is 4.5km long and drops -440m back to the bottom of the lift. It's an open, treeless route down, crossing a couple of north shore sections on the way, but nothing too skinny or technical.

The Jandri side

The Grand Nord

Starts from half way up the Jandri gondola. Be sure to get off here as if you're not comfortable riding red, rocky trails you'll not enjoy the route back from the glacier! This trail is a manageable 2km long and descends -360m. You join a connecting trail from here back to the top of green trail l'Ange which takes you back to the valley floor.

From the top of the Diable chair

Two choices: Diable or Lilith

Diable - is 5.3km long and descends -730m

Lilith - is slightly shorter at 4.5km, but also -730m.

Both trails meet half way down so you can try them out by doing laps of this lift. The trail turns into a green to get you back to the valley floor, with a nice easy run out.

Bike Patrollers trail

Further along the valley floor, more in the centre of resort this trail starts at the top of the village 1800 chairlift and is a nice, short 3km trail taking you down -390m. As you're descending you'll see the Crankworks area to your left.

Look for the unbroken blue DH lines on the map.
