The ice caves in Les Deux Alpes offer a true journey back to the ice age, with ethereal sculptures of dinosaurs and an impressive mammoth measuring six metres long and ten metres wide, all hewn directly from the Roche-Mantel glacier. Dug entirely by hand with nothing more than ice picks, the cave network consists of eight grottos, three rooms and the long entrance gallery, and takes around five months to complete each year.

If you’re looking to get out on the river while you’re in the area, Intégral Rafting offers whitewater activities in a truly unspoilt setting. Based in Vénosc, just beside the Ecrins National Park, their small and experienced team has been guiding rafting, canyoning and via ferrata adventures here for over a decade. Their outings are relaxed and sociable, with a focus on safety and fun rather than rushing through. The Vénéon river is their playground, and they’re the only ones operating on this particular stretch, which means you get a real sense of escape. It’s all done in small groups, with a strong respect for nature and the local environment.

Alternatively try your hand at Speed-riding. A skiing technique that uses a large wing to control direction or speed. With courses and professional training on how to safely speed ride it can be a whole new experience. You must be able to ski on a blue/red piste before trying speed-riding.
