Les 2 Alpes party hotspots for winter 2019

A rundown of the best bars and clubs in town

Featured in: | Ian Huyton, Les 2 Alpes Reporter | Published

Les Deux Alpes has a well-deserved reputation for great nightlife alongside great skiing and a great atmosphere in the town. There are over 40 bars and three nightclubs, so you will never be short of choice when you are looking for a party.

While there are good bars throughout the resort, the densest concentration is towards the Venosc end of town. From the Rue des Vikings roundabouts to the Place de Venosc, there are around 15 bars and clubs within a few minutes’ walk, giving somewhere to suit most tastes. If nightlife is a priority for you, you may want to choose this end of the resort when booking accommodation.

Starting on the slopes, the Pano Bar is the place to be seen in the afternoon. Deux Alpes' answer to the Folie Douce, Pano is all about the music and the party. The terrace is lively throughout the winter but I prefer it later in the season when it catches the afternoon sun. Before that, you need to be partying hard enough to stay warm. For a more laid-back alternative to Pano, the Diable au Coeur has a sunny terrace with a great bar, DJs and occasional live bands. Facing west, this spot will get the last rays of the sunset at any time of the year.

Heading down the pistes but not too far away, the Umbrella Bar at the foot of the Coolidge beginner area should be next on your list. The large umbrella opens and closes depending on the weather and the atmosphere within, while the DJ occupies a cable car-shaped booth at the back. There are friendly après ski bars along the length of Les Deux Alpes. A few worth mentioning are the Polar Bear with a suspended open fire and live music, Le Saloon with regular live music, the Sherpa which was the first bar in resort to install fires in its outdoor tables, The Red Frog towards the Venosc end of town and three cosy bars near the U supermarket – the Windsor, Mezzanine and Motown Café.

After dinner

For getting your dancing shoes on and hitting the town after dinner, the Jukeboxx is a firm favourite. Great resident DJs, regular guests and frequent themed nights make this a great destination. Just up the road, the Kre Shooter Bar does a great range of cocktails, shooters and crazy drinks. A short walk around the corner brings you to The Spot where Tuesday and Wednesday nights are Acousti-oke nights. Act out your rock star fantasies and sing along with Jamie on acoustic guitar.

The pirate-themed Rhumerie has become something of a legend over the last two decades. The homemade flavoured rums and punches are truly dangerous. The bar has a chilled seating area upstairs in the rigging too. Over in the Place de Venosc, La Grotte du Yeti is a late-night bar that has long been popular with Scandinavian visitors.

Late night

After midnight, many people gravitate towards the Rue de Cairou, where three destinations sit side by side. Mini Bar is the smallest of the three with steel and brick giving a cool urban vibe and DJs pumping out the beats. Smithy’s next door is one of the biggest bars in town, with a decent sized dancefloor that is usually packed by the end of the night. The restaurant upstairs has a small bar with space to chill out if you need a break from the mayhem below. Finally, the Avalanche is the biggest club in town, opening from 20:00 until four or five in the morning.

Not far away, the Café Bresilien is another popular late-night destination. Unlike the Avalanche, which fills up suddenly when Smithy’s closes, the Brésilien attracts a steady stream of revellers throughout the night. Regular live music before midnight is followed by clubbing until the early hours. At the other end of the resort, O’Brians bar and club at Village 1800 has DJs and a buzzing dance floor and is open from the evening until early morning.

Festivals

Whilst every week is a party week in Les Deux Alpes, there are a number of festivals scheduled throughout the week for those looking for something bigger. Rise Festival is the biggest, taking place just before Christmas each year, but there are more festival weeks to look forward to throughout the winter season. Check our events calendar.
